Streets of Shame

During the military dictatorship, thousands of Brazilians were killed and tortured by the government.
That period ended 32 years ago, but there are street signs that still honor the military directly involved with those atrocities.

During the Military Coup Anniversary, we covered those street signs that honor those militaries with replicas honoring worldwide famous dictators instead. For a couple of days Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Benito Mussolini, and others became a street name in São Paulo and caused a grand furor, kick-starting our guerilla campaign.

All the guerrilla signs had the same message. "Whoever killed or tortured, cannot become a street name. Help us to remove this street sign and the one underneath it. Learn more: ruasdavergonha.org"
